Dorothy Napangardi is a Warlpiri woman from Mina Mina, near Lake McKay in the Tanami Desert, north of Yuendumu in Central Australia. She is regarded as one of the leading artists of the contemporary Aboriginal Art movement with her works featuring in exhibitions throughout Australia, the USA and Europe.

Dorothy was first introduced to painting in 1987 by her sister and artist, Eunice Napangardi. Painting her father’s homeland at Lake McKay she created her own unique style to describe these homelands. Her paintings are shaped by an interlacing network of dotted lines, forming a micro and a macro study of the land.

Her work creates the homeland topography while telling a story of the ancestral tracks. These lines represent the salt incrustations around the dry claypans etched with the tracks of the women. As the mother of five daughters, Dorothy teaches her stories and Dreamings as she was taught. She is highly involved in women’s ceremonies within the Warlpiri society and currently moves between Yuendumu and Alice Springs.

In 1991 Dorothy won the Best Painting in European Media, 8^th National Aboriginal Art Award and the Northern Territory Art Award in 1998.  In 1999 she was “Highly Commended” for the 16th NATSIA Art and in 2001 won the 18th Telstra NATSIA.  Art Award.

In 2009 Dorothy was listed as one of the 50 Most Collectable Artists by the Australian Art Collector magazine. Sadly Dorothy passed away in 2013.
