Joanne Currie Nalingu<\/strong> was born in 1964 and grew up on the riverbanks of the Maranoa at the Yumba, an Aboriginal Mission outside of Mitchell in southwest Queensland. She is a self taught artist, and began painting in 1989.<\/p>\n

Joanne’s artworks interpret these formative times and continue Joanne’s intensive exploration of motifs and symbols of the Maranoa. Joanne’s childhood memories are of a grass roots lifestyle – families and hardships. Her choice of colour and form in her works reflects this heritage – both personal and cultural.<\/p>\n

Joanne has exhibited since 1990 in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia and overseas.<\/p>\n

In 2008 she won The Wynne Prize at The Art Gallery of NSW and has been a finalist 6 times in the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Awards at Museums and Galleries of the Northern Territory Darwin. She has also exhibited at Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane; Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, Melbourne and Queensland regional galleries. Joanne\u2019s work is held in numerous private and public collections including: Queensland Art Gallery\/GoMA; Queensland Museum; Museum of Brisbane; The Brisbane Airport Corporation and collaborative public artworks with Campfire group artists in Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.<\/p>\n
